More relaxed than actually hiking Tanigawadake and it's ridgeline is going zu the area for Momiji/ enjoying Koyo. Timing would be mid of October (roughly) in case you take the ropeway up and end of October for the valley and Ichikurasawa.

Tanigawadake is actually easily accessible by Shinkansen from Tokyo (Tokyo – Yuzawa Station) and then change to a local train to Doai station. Which turned out to be a sightseeing spot in it’s own right.

Location: Doai Station - go there by train! And take the northbound platform back to echigoyuzawa! - then 20min to the trailhead, which is across the first bridge righthand side along the river.
