Mid Feb - Mid March there is one reason more to visit Mt. Tsukuba: Ume Matsuri. Well though it is a nice spot the plum festival alone might not be worth the trip but combined with some hiking and nice views it definitely is. Thanks to cablecar and ropeway you can easily scale your trip to the preferred level when it comes to hiking.

Location: about 1 hour trainride from Tokyo (depending where you start, from Kita-Senju ist just half an hour to Tsukuba station) plus 30 min by bus (well signed, not to miss actually). Once there you can decide to hike first (cable car or hike up) or go to ume matsuri first. I recommend ume matsuri after as it is not that large. As I mentioned this trip should be considered as a hiking trip with an add on not the other way around.
