Want to admire autumn leaves? Up for Hiking? Camping? Bored of Mt Takao and Mitake? Head to Nikko in autumn! It's quite a trip but Nikko provides so many things to do and is considered as one of the most famous tourist spots around Tokyo, you might think to stay a night or two. Besides countless culturethings to do, see and visit - not so many people think about it as a splendid hiking area. Around lake Chuzenji for example.

The southern mountains are not that hard to climb but provide some nice views, while the northern area, with famous Senjogahara (a wide plain) and several falls (like Ryuzu falls, Yudaki falls) add up to the scenery. It seems Senjogahara is much more famous and hence more crowded than the southern mountains. So depending on your mood choose wisely. And by the way: The camp site just south of Ryuzu falls directly at the lake is a splendid location to stay. Beware though: It gets damn cold in autumn nights up there, as the lake is on 1200m above sea level.
