It's a tough daytrip but absolutely possible. Tanigawadake is actually easily accessible by Shinkansen from Tokyo (Tokyo – Yuzawa Station) and then change to a local train to Doai station. Which turned out to be a sightseeing spot in it’s own right.

If you’re fine with the lazy way, take the ropeway up to 1400m elevation and then head toward tanigawadake and further on the ridgeline. As – for me – hiking the ridgeline is the actual point of interest I wanted to save time and took the ropeway.

Though was there only once so far – with bad weather – it appears to be a very interesting area for hiking from Tokyo to me. Many courses and options for two or three day hikes and the longest ridgeline hike in Japan – about 100km.

Location: Doai Station - go there by train! And take the northbound platform back to yuzawa! - then 20min walk to ropway or trailhead.
