27th July 2019. Technically not a matsuri but I don't want to miss listing one, if not the most crowded event in Tokyo. Furthermore fireworks and summer in Japan are as inseparable as obon matsuris and summer are. Sumidagawa Fireworks should not be approached with the expectation to have a relaxed time watching one of the largest fireworks in Tokyo, but rather in order to grasp the action around. But beware - it is incredibly crowded even by Tokyo standards and in case you are not very, very early you might end up walking around without being able to stop for watching. In case you plan to find a place on the street or some park area or sidewalk to sit down (good luck) have a plastic picknick sheet at hand in order to mark you territory.

There wont be spots on the street which are not covered by picknick sheets (or it is forbidden to settle tehre) hence you can't sit there cause other groups already settled there. Generally I would not advise to walk around searching for the best spot. Plan in advance, head to the spot you have chosen, spread your sheet and stay there.
Fireworks will be canceled or postponed in case of rain or stormy weather so check the internet/ twitter of sumidagawa hanabi for updates.
Fireworks starts at 7pm and will run for 90 minutes.
For location (well Sumida river banks) please google. There are excellent hints and descriptions out on how to prepare to survive the event.
